Understanding SIL supports

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded support that helps people with disability live more independently in a shared home. It includes help with everyday tasks – like cooking, cleaning, personal care, and medication management – while also supporting you to build confidence and life skills.

SIL is often suited to people with higher or ongoing support needs, especially those who want to live with others. While SIL helps fund the supports you receive, it doesn’t cover rent, groceries, or the cost of your home.

Consider this

Keep control of your supports

The NDIS encourages you to choose separate providers for your SIL supports and your housing. That way, you’re not relying on one organisation for everything and you have more flexibility if your needs change.

With My Supports, you choose who supports you and how. We take the time to match you with the right support workers and build a plan that fits your life – not someone else’s roster.

Why we’re different

Why choose My Supports?

We’ve been delivering Supported Independent Living since the earliest days of the NDIS. Our small, local Neighbourhood Teams are built from people who live and work in your community, delivering consistent, reliable support.

As a Disabled People and Families Organisation (DPFO), over half of our team has lived experience of disability. We bring empathy, insight, and a strong belief that support should be personal, respectful, and led by you.

If SIL feels too structured, we can also talk to you about Individualised Living Options (ILO) – a more flexible support arrangement for those with lower support needs.

Who we are
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers about Supported Independent Living.

These additional resources provide further information and guidance on Supported Independent Living (SIL) available through the NDIS.

Who is SIL best suited for?

SIL is generally for people with higher support needs who want to live with others and need help throughout the day or night.

How long does it take to get SIL funding approved?

This depends on your plan and support needs. We can help you prepare the documents and guide you through the process.

Can I keep my SDA funding and still access SIL?

Yes. SIL supports your daily care, while SDA contributes to the cost of renting the physical property. Most people with SDA funding use both together.

Here’s a helpful resource on Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

What if my needs change?

You can review your supports at any time. The NDIS allows for changes if your situation changes. We can help you with changing your NDIS plan.

Can I move from SIL to ILO?

Yes. If your support needs change or you want something more flexible and independent, an Individualised Living Option or ILO may be a better fit.

My Supports also provides advice about a range of other alternative living arrangements – the best fit for you may be SIL, ILO or something different to both.
