What kind of support would I be providing as a Support Worker?
As a Support Worker, you’ll be helping people with disabilities with a variety of tasks, such as personal care, meal preparation, household chores, transportation, and participation in community activities. The specific supports you provide will depend on your preferences as well as the individual’s needs and goals, but you’ll always work in a way that promotes their independence and well-being.
Do I need specific experience or qualifications to become a Support Worker, and what training will be provided?
All support workers must obtain a NDIS Worker Screening Check for your state and a Working with Children Card before commencing work. While experience in disability support or relevant qualifications (e.g., Certificate III in Individual Support) can be helpful, they’re not always required. We value lived experience, personal qualities like compassion and reliability, and a willingness to learn. My Supports provides comprehensive training and ongoing support to all our Support Workers.
All new Support Workers complete an in-depth Induction that covers My Supports’ key processes and values. You’ll also have access to ongoing training opportunities throughout the year to enhance your skills and knowledge. Where required for certain participants, My Supports provides training in the specific things you’ll need to know to support the person with a disability. Most of our training can be completed online.
What is an Individualised Living Option (ILO) and how do Support Workers fit in?
An ILO is a type of NDIS funding that allows people with disabilities to live more independently, often with the support of a Host or Housemate. As a Support Worker, you might be part of an ILO team, providing additional assistance and support to the person with a disability in their chosen living arrangement. You could also be providing supports in other independent living arrangements.
How will I be matched with clients?
We pride ourselves on carefully matching our Support Workers with clients based on compatible personality traits, interests, location, and support needs. We want to create relationships built on trust, respect, and shared interests.
We understand how much our Support Workers value having choice and flexibility with their clients. You’ll always have the right to decline a task or situation if you don’t feel comfortable or adequately prepared. We encourage open communication with your Team Leader and other team members.
I have a disability myself. Can I still apply to be a Support Worker?
Absolutely! My Supports is committed to employing people with disabilities. We believe that lived experience is a valuable asset and can lead to more meaningful and effective support. In fact, one of our biggest points of difference is that 50% of our staff have lived experience of disability.
