Understanding Individual Living Options (ILOs)
Individual Living Options (ILOs) are an NDIS-funded support that lets a participant choose the home they want to live in and set up supports that best suits them, and their supports.
We facilitate ILOs with a personalized approach that works alongside other NDIS supports, family, friends, and community networks to provide a sense of belonging, connection with others, and a safe, supportive lifestyle.
We like to describe an ILO as a personalised housing and care arrangement.

What is an ILO and how do Hosts and Housemates fit in?
An Individual Living Option (ILO) is an NDIS-funded arrangement supporting a person with a disability to live in the community. Hosts and Housemates provide a home and support as part of that ILO. The person with the disability chooses the Host or Housemate.
What does an ILO Host do?
An ILO Host provides a home for a person with a disability in their own home, offering companionship, disability-related support, household assistance, emotional support, and a family environment.
What does an ILO Housemate do?
An ILO Housemate shares a home with a person with a disability, providing companionship, disability-related support, household assistance, and emotional support. The person with the disability lives in their own home, and the housemate is invited to share it.
What kind of ongoing support do Hosts and Housemates receive from My Supports?
You’ll have constant support from a local My Supports Team Leader, with regular check-ins (around monthly, more often at first if needed). We are on-call when you need us and can help make adjustments to the ILO plan and participant supports as needed.
What training will I receive as a Host or Housemate?
Where required, My Supports provides training in the specific things you’ll need to know to support the person with a disability. Most of our training can be completed online.
Will I be compensated for being a Host or Housemate?
Great question, and one that we are often asked:
Hosts: Most arrangements involve rent/boarding payments from the person with a disability AND a regular NDIS-funded payment partially compensating you for your time (yet it is not classified as a “wage”).
Housemates: Most arrangements involve rent/boarding payments where you will live, and may include regular NDIS-funded payments partially compensating you for your time (again, not classified as a “wage”).
What costs AREN'T covered by the NDIS payments?
NDIS ILO payments do NOT cover the participant’s rent or everyday costs like food, electricity, and internet. These costs may be paid for separately from other participant support payments.
